TADANORI YOKOO

Typography & Layout

The goal of this project was to understand the designer and translate him into typography, in relation to space, images, and form for an article feature in a magazine.

ARTICLE DESIGN

TYPESET

In this typeset my aim was to create contrast between all three fonts in use, resulting in a contemporary feel. Highlighting the chaotic aesthetic of Tadanori Yokoo with Futura in combination with MOMA’s bold Franklin Goth, a font that has subtle irregularities in contrast to the Janson font which has a robust form with high legibility - was the ultimate cocktail to captivate the designer.

Tadanori Yokoo’s work is known for being associated with sex, violence, psychedelia, politics, controversy and for being experimental but most importantly progressive. His work dates back to the ’60s but is still relevant today, 60 years later. He knows no boundaries.

Futura is a sharp font that dramatizes, pumps energy and emotion in a futurist ideal. I used Futura to convey the idea of modernism and intimidation in contrast with the classic Janson (Roman) and the bold Franklin Goth (condensed). To achieve an aesthetic that is edgy, a bit grunge but modern and sharp.
